Sales Call Mistakes: When a Sales Call Goes Off the Rails (and What to Do About It)

Ever wonder what the most common sale call mistakes are? Or get off a sales call and immediately think, “Wow… that was a disaster”? Yeah—me too. In fact, it happened during my own recent launch.

Even as a launch strategist and copywriter who’s handled countless calls, I completely flubbed one. But here’s the thing: messing up isn’t the end of the world. It’s what you do next that matters.

So let’s talk about sales call mistakes—specifically, four big ones I made so you don’t have to.

Why this one call mattered

I was in the middle of my launch. Energy was high, things were moving… and I had a sales call booked with someone who seemed like an ideal fit. But one time mix-up later, I showed up frazzled, unprepared, and reactive. The result? A conversation that felt clunky, off-balance, and not at all aligned.

These weren’t just any hiccups—they were classic sales call mistakes that threw off the entire vibe.

But mistakes are lessons. And this one was packed with them.

4 sales call mistakes that cost me

  • I was unprepared
A simple calendar misread left me scrambling because I didn’t have proper time to prep for the call. This is one of the most preventable sales call mistakes out there. Moral of the story? Always confirm your appointments (and maybe set a backup reminder!) and take time to do a little research on the person coming to the call.

  • I didn’t set the tone from the get-go.
I let the client take control of the call, and because I was already flustered from not prepping (thanks, time zone confusion), the whole tone was off. One of the sneakiest sales call mistakes is not establishing structure early. Setting an agenda can change everything.

  • I didn’t ask enough questions.
Instead of pausing to get context, I jumped into answers. And that meant I couldn’t tailor my responses in a meaningful way. This is a big one on the sales call mistakes list—talking too much, and listening too little.

  • I made assumptions.
Without doing the pre-call homework or listening deeply, I ended up making assumptions that didn’t land—and got called out for it. Ouch. But hey, sometimes the most painful sales call mistakes are the ones that teach us the most.

If you’ve ever fumbled a sales call…

…you’re not alone. But every awkward moment is a learning opportunity. This episode walks you through each of these sales call mistakes in detail—plus how to shift your approach so you come to the call prepped, confident, and in control.
