Why I Started My Business (And What Botox Had to Do With It)
You know that question we ask all the time as business owners — “What’s your why?”
Well… when was the last time you actually answered it?
Recently, a subscriber flipped the script and asked me — and it took me by surprise.
I realized I don’t talk about why I started my business nearly enough. So in this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain and telling the real story behind why I started my business.
Spoiler: it involves Botox, boredom, and eyelash extensions.
Why I Started My Business Isn’t a Straight Line
If you’re anything like me, why I started my business isn’t one single, shiny reason. It was a mix of wanting something different, realizing I was capable of more, and honestly? Wanting to pay the electric bill and get a little Botox.
I was about to turn 40 and I just knew I didn’t want to be someone’s assistant forever. I had no idea what came next, but I was sure of one thing: this wasn’t it.
The First Steps Toward Why I Started My Business
When I look back at why I started my business, I can trace it to two oddly specific motivations: financial flexibility and vanity (Botox and lashes, anyone?). But more than that, it was about feeling stuck and wanting something more.
So I dipped my toes into the online world as a social media manager. Spoiler alert: I hated it. But it showed me what I did love — storytelling and copywriting. And from there, my path shifted again.
Discovering the Deeper Reason Why I Started My Business
As I worked with clients on email copy, I noticed a pattern. Some launches soared, others flopped — even with great copy. That disconnect led me to uncover a huge gap in the online space: no one was teaching how to pre-launch.
That realization became the deeper reason why I started my business. Not just to write words that sell, but to help people prepare their audience in a way that leads to easier, more aligned launches.
What You Can Learn from Why I Started My Business
Sharing why I started my business isn’t just about me. It’s about helping you reflect on your own story:
- What moment made you want something different?
- What part of your business lights you up?
- Where do your past “mistakes” point to something deeper?
Because the truth is, understanding why you started your business helps you show up more confidently, market more clearly, and connect more deeply.
